Earnings per click doubled with smaller ad

i had 1 336x280 which on average made 45 cents per click, yesterday redesigned my site and changed that ad ( the only ad on my page ) to a smaller 468x60 that has 2 links because i wanted the page to look more ad-less, clicks are averaging almost $1 per click for the day though my ctr dropped. so far 69 clicks $61

basically im guessing that because there are only 2 links surfers dont have much of a choice but to click on 1 of the 2 best payers instead of with the 336x280 that has 3 or 4 links.

so i changed the ads thinking i would make less $$$ which was fine to me as long as i didnt have that 336 ad taking up half the page but in turn its working backwards on me and today looks like will be my highest earnings day :)

don't Jump into a Immedeate conclution Some times the ads displayed in the 2 ad block may not be relevent to them.

More over the big rectangle can give then a wide varitey of ads to click. May be your Idea too an better option

When you have two ads in a large ad, the advertisers will pay more for those ads.

sometimes less ad can make you more money. when you have more ads on a page, higher paying ads show on the top and lower paying ads later. however, you canot control visitor click pattern and some will click on lower paying ad and some on higher paying ad bringing the average down. if you have less ads, then only higher paying ads will display and will give you more revenue. but you need to experiement to see whether it made your CTR go down or not

fewer ads means less options for the user to click on low paying ads.

What sultanofseo said is right. Constantly testing the ad location is a good way to figure out which one pays the most. Congrats and hope you will discover more profitable ad positions in near future. And pls share it with us if that happens! :)

I think this is common sense, less ads means less spots where high paying ads compete to get in, rather a bigger ads unit where even the low paying ads can enter. Anyways, the bigger rectangle has helped to improve the CTR a lot, so its a good idea not to experiment with that.
