You should try and buy links on other people's sites. Sig links are a good way of getting your message across. Article Marketing is supposedly quite good, too. This works by writing an article about your niche with your link at the bottom. You then submit this to article directories. You can monetize the blog by putting PTC advertisements such as Google Adsense on there, and when you get a decent amount of traffic/PR you can try selling links from your site, too
If you still need to create a blog then I would first put your effort in making a decent blog and promote that before looking into cashing in on your site. Without visitors it is very hard to earn a decent amount from your blog. I would try to incorporate google adsense or something similar from the start just to make sure that you can place those ads on the best possible locations without having to change your whole site in a later stage.
You have to write articles on a daily basis and get hits ... later go for google adsense and the advt banner on your site.
agreed with hostingonweb, continuous writing is needed for a successful blog, you need to write good unique content and then try to get a lot of backlinks from related blogs and forums which are high in PR, this way you will have a steady supply of visitors and visitors can be converted into money using the suggestions given by the DPites above
Also, if you have ads from the start, readers are more accepting of them - as you say, they're just part of the site design. If you start off ad-free, some people may take the pip and leave when you eventually add them. Silly, I know, but that's the psychology of it. Even if your Google Adsense earns you next to nothing to start with, it's a statement of intent that this is an ad-supported blog.
