eAccelerator is the chit

Just installed it on my server, I've always went with Zend because thats what everyone else did... we'll theirs a HUGE difference between what Zend did and eAccelerator does.

My research shows that Zend doesn't do much for speed at all really, I guess it optimizes the code but thats barely noticeable. eAccelerator caches the code.

At any rate... I've never noticed much of a difference with Zend, but eAccelerator makes a hugh huge difference for my forums.

Using it too, wouldn't want to go back to Zend.

    True dat!

To be honest, I think eAccelerator (or something like it) should just become a part of the core PHP code. I would never (ever) run PHP without it.

Umm.. are you comparing apples and oranges? It is probably misnamed but the purpose of Zend Optimizer is really to run Zend encoded programs. Its defaults installation actually slows things down unless you combine it with something like APC.

Just saying Zend is unclear. It would be like saying my Ford gets less gas mileage then my Honda Accord.

Zend Platform would be more the thing to compare to eAccelerator.

Yes I know it's apples to oranges (php optimizer vs cacher) and yes I know zend offers an encoder and an optimizer. My point was that many people feel Zend is "it" for php performance (I thought that, and had never heard of eAccelerator until lately).

But anyways, I'm currently running a server load of 0.22 and I'm at 15k uniques for the day already... normally I'd be at around 1.0 with this kind of traffic. I'm also running the latest mysql now and am caching that too, so thats part of the load drop also.

    Intel Dual Xeon 3.06Ghz
    8GB Registered ECC DDR RAM
    73GB 15,000rpm U320 SCSI drives in Hardware RAID 10

I'm on a VPS, I get 1 gig of that ram - they don't disclose the way they handle the processor distribution though. ServInt.com

Yes it does. You can run WHM/cPanel or Plesk or nothing it's up to you. They'll install additional software whatever you want whenever you want. Been around for a long time, phenominal host. They treat me like I spend $10k a month there.

I have had the same excellent results with eaccelerator. I was running a 2-3 load on my 3.2ghz HT FREEBSD server and I tried the eaccelerator...instant success. Now I run at .5-1 load and the server runs like a charm. I was thinking I needed a new server but I saved myself hundreds if not thousands by using this. The only problem is running ioncube with it...there is an incompatibility between the 3.
