I was wondering what is a good e-commerce modual or whatever for joomla. Not sure if it matters but this will be for pet products and hold a few thousand items. I would prefer free. But will to spend some money if I need to.

VirtueMart is the module for you, but i wouldn't recommend it for ecommerce unless you have too, its simple use ecommerce platform for ecommerece site and keep the cms for the cms
The problem with VirtueMART is that is has a lot of bugs, I spent hours cleaning out all the bugs on my website. Unless you have the patience to thoroughly check everything then it's a great powerful tool.
