E-booklet - sell it, give it away, or ?

I have an e-booklet, about 50 pages long for a niche topic.

What I want is to increase relevant traffic to my forum site.

Should I sell the e-book, with a teaser displayed at other sites?

Give the e-book away, to revisiting members after participation and time?

    Any other suggestions?

I think it would depend on the niche and if theres any other current guides on the topic.
Is this SEO/Marketing related or an ebook about a niche market that your optimizing for?
If its not SEO/Marketing related I'd give it away free after registration or some other fashion. Depending on your market people could notice and then link to your site for the PDF stating to register and visitors might stay for more content then. If you do give it away easily, make sure you clearly state copyright and redistributing rights.

Depends on the product and how unique it is. Giving it away can help it spread faster.

I wrote an ebook that i was selling here at DP for $10, and sold nearly 1,000 copies. I figured that since it was so popular, if i gave it away free in my blog I would get butt-loads of traffic... but it didnt quite work out that way..
so i guess it depends on what it's about and how well you market it..

For ebook sale you have to use rentacoder.com or getacoder.com

Other than tid bits here and there, don't ever give stuff away! Practically all don't really spread the word as much as you think, and many consider something more valuable if there is $ sign attached to it. Believe it, or not.

Plus, you have a lot of unappreciative moochers out there, and they do you no good. That's the main reason why I don't do it.

But do a test. Try it both ways.

You can do both : sell it to those who want and also give them for free to revisiting members.

    Hello Libertate

Consider giving it in exchange for visitor registration......Test, test, test

Sounds good, but how many of them will create a Yahoo or G-mail account to get it? How many will actually keep coming back after reading it?

But, you're right on one thing...test, test, test.

Sometimes, give it away for free do not work well.

If you ebook is of good value, then perhaps set up a campaign using viral refer-friends script and give it away only to those who had referred some friends.

Or, you can use the ebook to build a list of buyers, and turn the buyers to become your instant affiliate, this case, you build a list that actually active.

Thank you for all the thoughts so far.

The booklet is not SEO/SEM or even technical. It is health related.

It is in a form of "top 10" (more like top 50) or "how to/how not to", with descriptions and details of each item. It also contains direct comments and feedback from niche experts and professionals (medical, nutritional, exercise, etc.), and where available footnotes include 'official' references.

The booklet lends itself to be periodically reviewed, and requires no sequential reading.

I can create a short introduction for it, which I can give away and use as the marketing tool.

I could allow someone to purchase the booklet outright, or become a member by registration, 30 day membership, and several posts prior to getting the complete booklet for free.

    Does this sound reasonable?

i think you should sell the e-book, with a teaser displayed at other sites, because you we profit from it.
