Does registering a domain for a longer duration have any effect on search engine rankings? Or the so called trust factor if any? My domain is registered till 2008 would any of the pro's advise me if it any good having it registered for a longer duration and what effects would it have on serps if any and if there is anything else which gets affected by the duration of domain registration.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

yes, longer registration is better than short.

If indeed (speculation AFAIK) there are any effects they will be negligible.

I agree with you that they're most likely negligible, but it isn't just speculation exactly. in some of the papers that've been released by google, the length a domain is registered into the future is listed as a factor for ranking sites-- whether or not they're using it is another question. they list a lot of random stuff in those things those, a lot of which we pretty much know aren't being used.

if a site is really important to you paying for two years at a time shouldn't be that big of a deal though, honestly. just in case.

I bet that a longer registration has as much influence on your position in the SERP's as the date of your marriage.

Yes, there is a Google patent about this. No, it does not make sense to use that to measure the quality of a web site. This kind of patents mainly exists to obstruct innovations from competitors and confuse webmasters.

it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to penalize websites for getting links too fast either, or for having a new domain, but google does that. "it doesn't make sense" doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I doubt it is, personally... but is paying two or three years in advance for a really popular site all that big of a deal, even if it may give you a miniscule advantage?

I seriously do not think there would be any difference between two or three years vs 7. but go nuts, if you want.
