I have taken on a new client. They have two of the exact same websites one is hosted on a subdomain of their parent companies domain the other has its own domain. The sites are exactly the same and the site on the parent companies sub domain is indexed and shows up in the SERP's they want to get the site on their own domain ranking in the SERP's and do SEO, linkbuilding, ETC. for it. I doubt google will have the exact same site showing up in the SERP's. So how should I go about handling this, should a 301 redirect work?..?..?
    Any suggestion would be helpful
    Thanks.

The need to build their OWN site containing their OWN unique content at the new domain. It would be absolutely stupid to now make a third copy of parent domain's site at yet another domain.

Once they have their own unique site in place then they should 301 redirect each URL on the parent company's sub-domain on a page-by-page basis to the URL on their new site whose content most closely resembles the content at the old URL at the old sub-domain site.

301 direct should be the best solution for that problem.
