So I have a site and on another page of my site, I have duplicate content. What will happen? Will both pages be punished in the search engines? Will the new page be punished while the old page does not get punished? How does Google and the other search engines treat duplicate content?

To begin with what is the purpose of having the dupes? Meaning what is the situation where you'd need identical pages or dupe content?

its not completely duplicate. One page is the full text, and the other page is just a sample of the text (1 or 2 paragraphs). This is for the viewer to see a preview of the full text before they click on it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a 'snippet' on the home page and link to the full content of the piece if that's what you mean

    Yes?

Agreed, you won't be penalized or anything. In my experience, more weight will be given to the full text version.

Only the newly duplicated page will be punished, as long as the page with an original content is indexed by SEs. But don't worry, your site will be indexed in the supplemental index, but you need to reword every word, or the whole content for you to go out of that dreaded hell called supplemental result.

As long as the pages are not identical one of them will get a better value, nothing more.

    On a related note

Many people refer to duplicate content ‘penalties’ and getting ‘penalised’ or ‘punished’. That is a bit of a misnomer. It is actually a duplicate content filter and it is applied at varied stages of the indexing and retrieval process (according to G and YaH at least). That’s it – to help serve up the most relevant response to a query by removing duplicate or erroneous documents (web pages) he he..

NOW – if you have duplicate content as well as satisfying other spam filters (KW stuffing, cloaking, link spam etc..) if can GRADUATE into a PENALTY situation. Obviously if you have duplicate content in aggregate (a TON of it… ) you may also trip a more stringent filter leading to penalization.

Most situations people talk about are more in tune with filters NOT penalties.

    Just for the record

Duplicate content is a delicate issue. The metrics are not fully known but it has been suggested that the older the site, the more it will be shielded from dup content penalty. It is assumed that the newer site copied from the old.
