Hey there, I have about 60 million product descriptions through affiliate programs. These descriptions are the same across hundreds of websites causing duplicate content throughout the net. I would like my descriptions to be unique to get more pages indexed and better search results. Is there a service that takes a paragraph and replaces adjectives and / or phrasing to make the wording unique? Is there a downloadable thesaurus database? If I had my own database of adjectives, I could create a neat little script that would take adjectives and replace it with a random one. Does anybody know any other solutions? Sincerely, Travis Walters
maybe you can use a tool like search and replace to search for a phrase and replace it with another one...i think thats the best you can do.....
There are TONS of applications available that do this. Search for article spinners. However, I will warn you... The output they generate is NOT very good, and requires editing. And simply doing global find and replace of a few adjectives on a page isn't going to make that much difference at Google. They have patents on Near Duplicate Detection techniques... They can tell that your description is 73.538% duplicate of the original. If you're running an ecommerce type affiliate site then I would suggest: 1) Don't worry about the duplicate descriptions. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty. Penalties prevent your URL from ranking well no matter how many inbound links you have, no matter how highly authoritative or trusted the sites linking to it are... Pages with duplicate content FREQUENTLY outrank the original versions of the same content. Having duplicate content on your page simply makes it a little harder to get it to rank than to get the original to rank. You can compensate for duplicate content w/ a few extra inbound links. OR 2) Write your own descriptions of the products by hand. I would highly suggest not using an article spinner to change your descriptions as your users are going to read the descriptions and think your site is unprofessional and it will likely reduce conversions.
Exactly so! If the opposit were true, then it were too simple to drag your competitors down by bombing some article sites with your competitor's site content. Duplicate content just doesn't count (as much) for SE. That's all it means.
Hey there, Thanks for the responses so far. Shuman202 - A manual search and replace would not work. There are over 60 million products so it would take several years to go through them all. A programmatic search and replace on adjectives may be a feasible idea if I could find a good thesaurus database. Canonical - While an entire website may not be penalized for duplicate content, a particular page may not get indexed if its entirely duplicate content - thus that particular page is "penalized" in some peoples minds. I did a little test run of about 200 product detail pages and 7 out of 200 pages got indexed - 4 out of those 7 of those I rewrote the descriptions and 2 of them I linked to from a forum. Two conclusions could be 1) rewriting the descriptions pays off and 2) linking to the pages from external sources can overcome the duplicate content "penalty" of not being indexed. I think Google sees a big difference in a description being 100% duplicate content and 50% duplicate content. Rumour - I had a competitor website point their domain name to my website so it appeared to Google to be exactly the same. Everything was duplicate. I was using relative links at the time so the user browsed and stayed on their website. I now use absolute links so if that happens again, a single click anywhere would take the user to my website. However, the point being, their website had a higher PR than mine. Of course, this is just Google's way of saying that their website was more important than mine for various reasons mainly linkage. Because of this, their webpages were appearing above mine even though I created them first. Do you have any recommendations for article spinners? I would like a service that has some sort of API if possible. If the quality is as bad as you say it is, finding a thesaurus database may be a better solution. Like I said before, I would rather my page be 50% duplicate than 100% duplicate just so I can get more pages indexed. Do you guys have anymore thoughts? Always love learning and hearing other people's opinions Sincerely, Travis Walters
I really disadvise against using article spinners unless you don't mind that the text becomes humanly un-understandable. Already at 30%, it will become rubbish! The same applies to a thesaurus if you're gonna do it automated! The reason is that there are way too many words that have a complete different meaning when used in another context. Take the word "also" as an example. In an article spinner as well as with a thesaurus, this word will be replaced by its synonyms "as well" or "besides" or "likewise" or "too". Now, form a sentence with "also" and replace the word with these synonyms. In certain certences, this will work fine, it others, it will raise questions. All depends from the context. And this is only with one word ... . I fear that you're gonna make it worse than it is now. Google may like it somewhat better but your human visitors will leave immediately! Success!
They can't leave if they never reach the page to begin with. If the content is not a bit more unique, then it will not get indexed. Is there an article spinner that changes only adjectives? Changing "stunning" to a random word such as "beautiful" or "gorgeous" may increase original content while keeping the same meaning. If a spinner could tell the part of speech and then select adjectives to change, then it might get better results? Sincerely, Travis Walters
You are expecting way too much from article spinners. In fact, article spinners just don't take the meaning of words or sentences into account. They just replace words with a synonym without accounting for its meaning or context. However, if you have tens of dozens of sites that all have the same content, then there is a way if you don't do it automated but under your own control. Depending on how many different texts -for the sites you have- must be done, then maybe it's doable.
