I have a website that I publish articles from goarticles.com. The search engines may see these articles on my site and give me a duplicate content penalty. What is the best way to design my website template to avoid this type of penality?

I assume you want SE's to read the content, right?

    If so, get unique content.

You can avoid getting a dup content penalty by clearly stating who the article is by and where it is from with a link back to the original author. You probably won't get any credit for the page but your site shouldn't get penalised. (That is, if the reprinted articles are not the only thing on your site - if you have unique, good content that is supplemented by the odd article, that works ok).

SEs don't penalize for articles that run on multiple sites coz they understand the nature of articles and what they bring to a certain site.

For some dup content, the SEs will only list a few instances of it and filter out the rest. That's not a penalty, it's just so we won't see the same stuff again and again and again.

Though I believe that it's not a good thing if you got 2 or more pages with duplicate content on the same domain.

I agree in general with redqueen.

You should not receive a penalty for publishing articles or press releases for that matter. Everyday, thousands of websites publish articles and press releases that they did not personally create. There is nothing wrong with this. Likewise, if websites pick up an article that you also publish on your own website, you will not be penalized.

Thanks for the info. Then what type of site would receive this duplicate content penality you hear so much about?

Certainly sites which are exact copies will qualify. For those looking to double their content over night, the strategy will probably not work too well. But, in terms of the grayer areas, the duplicate content penalty supposedly is applied if too large of a percentage of content is the same as another site. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, I can just say that for things like articles and press releases, I haven't heard of anyone getting penalized.
