Lets say I have a domain name "DomainNames.com" with a website about "Domain Names". And this website is the #1 result in google for the search term "domain names".

Now, if the site gets penalized due to duplicate content, will the site still show up in searches for "Domain Names"? Can it possibly retain its #1 position?

    Any thoughts appreciated! :)

    Thanks!

A lot of people have been complaining about how a lot of duplicate contented sites are doing fine without seeing any penalty, so I guess so.

Its not a penalty its more of a filter. If you have the same content as other sites google will just make a decision which sites to show when a person searches for a particular query.

i don't think there's so much of a penalty as opposed to simply an exclusion of that content

mad4 is right; it's more like a filter..
BUT, if you have enough duplicate content (Spamming) you will be wiped out of the index. nut sure though if there are 'penalties'..
