Duplicate content (one for the techies)

I run a small SEO company and when signing up new clients we often find that their websites will have duplicate content or two home pages for example

    www.mysite.co.uk

    www.mysite.co.uk/index.html

Obviously this essentially cuts the link authority in half and the website's SERPS suffer dramatically.

Basically we use the <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mysite.co.uk" /> protocol to let spiders know which page is the homepage it should take note of.

Google also mentions using a 301 to the relevant resource from the duplicate content is necessary to re-enforce this.

Is it better to 301 the "/index.html" page to the normal ".co.uk" page or the other way round? Or does it really not matter at all?

Hope this makes sense, please let me know cheers.
