Duplicate content in archive

Hi, I have a photojournalism media commentary local news site. The home page is updated quite often, every few days, the other pages aren't. I'd like to archive previous versions of the home page each time I update it. Can anyone suggest the best way to do this?
My own thoughts are to just create a new folder, call it archives, link to it from a page on the main section of the site and put the old home pages in this folder.
There's a possible duplicate content penalty involved here. Although the home page changes quite often the content of this page doesn't always completely change.
For example, if I archived last week's home page, and also archived the home page from a few days' ago, they might both contain the same news story or article.
    Any suggestions welcomed.

I would suggest just archive the particular news / article. This way, you will have a more targeted page that benefit your SERP and avoid the duplicate content issue :)
