Duplicate Content????? I thought...

First off I am running a Dog Nutrition Blog and Forum... Yesterday there was a dog food recall and I copied the press release and posted it on my blog. I did address where I got the information from. I woke up this mourning and 2400 people had visited my blog, mostly through search engines. I know that it was the blog post because I would only have a couple of people visit the blog a day.

Now my question is I thought that duplicate information was not indexed, and even if it was indexed I wouldn't get any hits from it. How could this be?

    Hi,

Google loves blogs and in particular the ping system, when you posted your the press release it would have been picked up by Google within hours, I imaging that the company that issued the press release put it live on a system that doesn't have ping systems.

Google must have picked up your post before it had crawled the real press release. This is the power of blogs.

Google will not ignore all duplicate copies. Often a few copies will be indexed.

As I said before in a different post, Google Algorithm is really genius. I normally write any kind of news in my blog. Sometime a new posting become 1st ranking in given 'Keyword' within few minute!! But in one or 2 days later the original content and ranking come back in place....

    You know Google is Best...

Google gives preference to new post for a period of 2 days this is so that others know about this page and if they find it's good they link to you. This is Google's way of ensuring fare play. in 2 days time it will be put up at it's right place

We will see if you are right! As of right now I am still getting some pretty good traffic and some keywords for the post have improved.

Google give a New Content Boost to new pages and new sites, this boost helps them rank high in search results. But this boost is only temporary.

Because of this boost, even duplicate content is ranked high in SERPs, but only for few days. After that, it will vanish in the results.

This boost to new content is essentially to stop the monopoly of high authority sites in the SERPS. It gives new pages a chance to rank.
