I understood how the dupe content penalty works in terms of SERPs. My question is this - are back links in duplicate content still counted as a valid back link?
I don't think anybody could give a 100% answer on this, but more than likley it will count as a valid backlink unless Google refuse to index the site because of it's dupe content issues. However there's no harm in your link being there if it gives a valid backlink then good news, if not no problem.
I belive they would have to be a vaild back link or there would be no way of keeping track of this i think it would just be impossible to monitor/govern this.
Not sure but I think most of links are not counted as backlinks because, most of the duplicate pages do not get indexed in google. If a page get indexed, then I guess then we can count links from it as backlinks.
very interesting point you bring up, i'll look into this further and see what i come up with.. as Angilina said google wont index dups so i think you should be fine, but just work on sorting out dup titles and you will be fine
I think google counts them but gives them less authority, I think it also depends where the links go. If the link goes back to the original source of the content then google will know where the site is linking to is the original and punish it less. Well thats my understanding anyway
If the page with duplicate content got indexed in Google, then every backlinks in it should be considered as a normal backlink.. even though it not pass the same value as the first link on the unique content web page
it's funny the foreign speakers immediately think this is a question whether duplicate content is bad. the guy is asking if links within duplicate content are still counted. i would think they still hold value as backlinks.
it depends on the sites you dupe it on some still count some don't and there is no way to tell which is which.
Thanks for everyone's input. Although there is no clear cut answer, I think the closest is that links in dupe content will probably count but carry less authority. The question was asked in relation to articles. If you're blasting out the same article to dozens of article directories, all with the same bio box, it got me thinking whether this is worthwhile as, bar the first handful of directories that publish your article, the subsequent ones will drop into the dupe penalty box.
THERE IS NO DUPLICATE PENALTY. All that happens is Google selects what it considers to be the primary source and ignores the copies. There are numerous resources from Google and other sources that make this very clear. Demystifying the "duplicate content penalty" By Susan Moskwa, Google Fri, Sep 12 2008
If you're linked to from bad neighborhoods, or bad content websites that are of no relevancy to your website, you'll receive a PR Penalty at the least.
I think the links are counted as valid back links. The question is if links coming from sites with duplicate content are worth less. In my opinion a site with duplicate content have less "pagestrength" and links from such sites will probably not contribute much to serps.
Good reply but it doesn't answer the primary question. Is a link in non-SERPs content counted as a valid backlink?
i think the score with be less.. if you have back link in high PR and original content website that is better for search engines and real visitors too.
