Dumb Question - External Hard Drive networking

I have two computers connected to a router for wireless Internet sharing.

If I were to buy an external hard drive, and plug it into the router, would it work as a shared network drive for both computers? Or will there be some kind of special setup involved?

I want to set it up so both computers can save, open, add, and delete files to the same external hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why not just link the hard drive to a computer and make it a shared folder?
