Drupal Roles Question

    Drupal looks really cool, but one thing (among many) that I don't understand is how user roles are assigned.

    I see how I can set them up, but once I did I almost assumed that my user registration page would get a radio button set where the user could register as a role.

    Do I have to manually assign every user's role?

    You define the default role that a user acquires when they register. Thereafter you must manually upgrade them as you see fit.

    If you think about it for a moment, would you really want it any other way?
