Drupal ModRewrite - 200 Status for any URL containing index.php

I moved a site from Joomla to Drupal. Everything was hunky dory and great and then I started getting bombarded with 404.

I then discovered that Drupal returns the wrong status for URLs that contain index.php

so all my old indexed URLs are returning 200 on my Drupal site because Drupal's rewrite rules take any URL with index.php in it and redirects it to the home page.

How might I change the Rewrite rules to push old index.php/whatever URLs to the proper 404 Page Not Found
