Drupal hogs my subdirectories

I have never been faced with this problem and since I think it is likely a .htaccess problem I post here instead of the CMS forums.

Drupal hogs some of my subdirectories with Page Not Found errors.

What I mean is that I cannot use any other scripts within my drupal arena because of its error reporting.

    For instance,

    www.mychemistrytutor.com/forums works great

    but

www.mychemistrytutor.com/images will say Page NOT Found although there is an image hosting script there.

I cannot seem to access any subdirectory without it reporting "this is not a page in drupal"

please help, to make this site dance like I want it to dance I will need many scripts

but I can't see how one like SMF will work in a subdiretory but other won't?
