Drupal 5.x & 6.x were very dynamic & interesting times working with the CMS. Many people on drupal.org & many exciting new projects. Drupal 7.x lost a lot of the development activity that defined the platform. During that time, WordPress advanced to power over 30% of all websites on the internet, while Drupal's market share declined to 1-3% approximately. Drupal 8 has led to a major fork (BackDrop CMS) & major development activity in Decoupled/Headless solutions that avoid the Twig theme layer altogether. Nevertheless, Drupal has strong backing by Acquia and funding from Amazon, industry leader in a hot sector highlighted by recent deals for Magento & Red Hat. Strong future for the Drupal CMS but business activity in web development is much less on the platform than in years previous.
