What are differences? Can someone give me an overview and explain which is best?

If this is too vague, or a stupid question then please let me know and i will crawl into the darkest corner of the Dp forum and place a dunce cap on my head.

Many of the modules are not available for release on 6.x yet, that's a big problem.

FINALLY views and cck are ready for release for 6, but there's a lot you can't do on 6 yet because the modules aren't ready yet.

Drupal 6.X is much better than 5.x version. But not all modules are developed for version 6.x. So before you start making website in drupal, make sure what exactly you want, and make sure all modules are available.

What you need to do is first plan the site, find out what modules you need then make sure they're 6.x compatible.

The most obvious difference between 5x and 6x is the use of Ajax which makes it more efficient to use, So definitely aim for 6X.
Personally both my drupal sites are 6X and I can say that most modules support 6X now.

Edited: I would recommend starting off with Acquia's drupal build as it contains the latest drupal with all the esseintal modules out of the box..

    list of included modules: http://acquia.com/products-services/acquia-drupal-modules
    Download link: http://acquia.com/downloads

    good luck

I agree with the above, it really depends on what functionality you're looking for. I think most of the important modules are starting to migrate over to 6.x, but I'm still building my sites on 5.x just for stability and predictability. I plan to build a subdomain trial site on 6.x to see how it does.

@Solid_Nuts thanks for link to acquia, didn't know about that build, will definitely check it out.

Lots of modules are not ready for 6.x and thats why I am using 5.x. But 6.x must be better than 5.

I agree with what everyone else has said about depending on what you need. With that said, I would try to go drupal 6 if possible, if you dont, you'll just find you want to upgrade in a couple of months probably. I know I'm in that boat.
