    The short answer is hard work. Matt Drudge's father is the owner of refdesk.com so there is a family history of success on the Web. The Drudge Report started out as an email list in the mid-90s and built up a following before transitioning to the Web.

    The lesson in this particular case is that there is no substitute for work and persistence -- plus a measure of luck.
