Dropping SERP with more content

I've recently made the switch in a more seo-based approach. I have a domain that is over a year old, and had content on it for 10+ months. Because I hadn't worked on it, it recieved relatively little traffic. It is a site promoting a promotion for a specific product- I had huge sales promoting with PPC. I have started adding more content, adding backlinks from good sources, and generally tweaking it to make it more search engine friendly over the past few weeks. I also used google's webmaster tools and added a sitemap.
After all this work, I have watched my site fall in googles listings from the second page to page 10. Is this something I should be worried about, or is this something that just happens?

your site was left alone for some time now and wasn't being updated. all of a sudden you started updating your site and building backlinks. it is usual to drop in SERp ranking for sudden link building and site update activity. over time and with enough backlinks, you will climb back up. that is the general rule. it is however hard to say without looking at your site. there might be somethig else going on or you may have more competitors moving up which can explain the SERP drop as well

Sudden burst of activity does sometime result in loosing of serps but with continuous and consistent efforts, I am sure you would get back your position....fairly quickly.

Just take care not to go overboard with one particular effort and make them look as natural as possible!

The thing which happend to your site is left sometimes alone without any updation. Its very natural to drop from SERPs ranking if site wasn't get any backlinks and suddenlly it has got updated by building links. There is nothing to worry about, just continue link building, it will be back after some time.
