Dropping domain to lose power

I may be facing having to give a domain name to someone because of business relationship, law, etc.

I did SEO on thier site, and it's strong. They only have the rights to the domain not content.

Would it be better just to drop my registration on the domain so it loses power instead of transfering the domain and keeping it. I've had it registered for 2+ years.

How do they have rights to the domain if it's in your control?

Have you signed a contract? If its word of mouth then you are not obliged to honour it.

However if you are legally obliged to handover the domain then dropping it will land you in further trouble.

Keep the content and hand over the domain in that case.
