Dropped indexed URLs after rewrote links...

700+ index URLs were there on Google. I have recently rewritten my website URLs and also old URL requests will be redirected to new URL. Thereafter, number of index URLs on Google suddenly got dropped to below 150.

Is this a strange behavior or usually happening on Google ?

But when you request for old links, it will be 301 redirected to new links. Isn't this good enough?

I think you need to wait a little and if you've done everything correctly, then you will have more or less the same numbers. Let Google update its database with all your updated URLs.

You have rewritten your URL and then redirected Old URL to new one.. Meanwhile, if Google have found any URL giving response 404 then it may be possible that Google would have de-indexed it.. But this has rare chance.. As other have told, Wait for some time and many of your URL will start showing.

If you have redirected it using 301 redirect i suggest you to check Google webmaster tools too by below steps.
    1) Go to Google webmaster tools.
    2) Go to 'Site configuration' panel.
    3) Select 'Change of address' .
    4) You can see 'Tell us the URL of your new domain' . Below it you can write the new address of your website.
Change it and i think your problem will be fixed.

    Hi,

Don't be too worried about current status. Google does need time to re-index your 'new' urls. Building direct back links to your 'new' urls would be more helpful for this purpose.

    all the best,

Like AirForce1 said, just give it some time. Google crawls the entire public internet for information. It's reasonable to think that it might take a few weeks for it to completely recognize a drastic change in your website's url scheme.
