Most good dropped domains are backordered, for domain taster's drops you will have to be lucky

Have a read of http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/03/how-to-snatch-an-expiring-domain which is an excellent read for those wanting to know how to catch dropped domains.

Personally I use Pool.com and snapnames.com to catch domains I want.

I tried to buy some Expiring Domains but it is impossible without backorder.
Pool and Snapnames seem to be the best backorder services (but it costs at least 60$ if there is no bid!)

It is not completely luck. It is also hard work and research.
there is plenty domains that are being dropped everyday with high PR for absolutely no reason. It just got to have the right tools to do the research

You can use scripts, like the one suggested by alexts, to detect an interesting domain.
After that, you must pay a domain registrant that offers a backorder service (most popular Godaddy, Snapnames and Pool).
    Godaddy $19
Snapnames and Pool at least $60

    Thanks,

Unfortunately, a lot of them are registered on the same date of deletion.
