My personal opinion is to set up your website first. Get all your products listed and make sure your site looks nice. Then list a few more popular items on ebay and toss in a link to your store on the product details page. This will help get you more traffic to your website from people who view your items on ebay.

Here are some things to bear in mind.

    1. Regarding using PayPal and eBay - eBay and PayPal are owned by the same company. They make sure that everything is compatible between the two systems. Help is available for this on both sites.

eBay Help: Check the following eBay article, "How eBay and PayPal work together" in the eBay help files at http://pages.ebay.com/help/pay/paypal-and-ebay.html.

PayPal Help: Article, "Easily Accept Payments Online" at https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/marketingweb?cmd=_auction-outside&nav=2.2

    2. You can accept debit and credit cards through PayPal. Also, the buyer does not need a PayPal account for this. When they reach your payment page, they can select to either pay through an existing account or to just enter their debit/credit card information without entering the PayPal site.

If you want to accept payments directly through your website, you can set up a Merchant Account. Bear in mind that this takes even more set-up. When I set up mine I was required to provide tax information and have specific terms and conditions pages, etc., set up on my website for them to approve first.

Since you have Zen cart installed, I suggest that you see what Merchant Accounts it is compatible with. You don't have to, but if you select one that does not work with their system then you have to set up an Authorize.Net account at an additional $15 or so per month to act as a "gateway" between your shopping card and your merchant account.

I suggest you avoid setting up a merchant account until you know you must have one.

Dropshipping on EBay has proven to be really competitive for me. It's close to impossible to compete unless you have your own online store.

You will not make money dropshipping products through eBay with popular dropshipping companies such as Salehoo or Doba. The only way to dropship with eBay is to contact a manufacturer and see if they will dropship for you. Your competition will be much less, and you will be able to turn a profit then. I have done it myself.

Not many are discussing the fact that those are NOT real drop ship companies. They are middle guys drying to sell you at a MARKED UP price.

Almost all of their stuff can be bought from REAL wholesalers and manufacturers at a much lower price.

BUT... with that said, they ARE convenient and give you things like data feeds and marketing materials to help.

Many of these drop ship wholesale operations are very limited in what they offer us (the webmasters) in terms of inventory and pricing feeds and ordering capabilities.

If a company (at least here in the states) does not require you to submit a Reseller Tax ID #, then chances are they're just a middle guy - just like you - that is selling stuff they buy from wholesalers themselves.

This doesn't always mean they don't offer good prices (some of them actually have big buying power like DOBA), but overall you'll find that you'll have a higher profit margin if you stick with REAL drop-shippers (meaning real manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers).

You have to also be aware that many of them are just trying to sell you some type of shopping cart filled with over-priced inventory that they automatically populate for you.

If a drop-shipper charges a fee to join - stay away. There is no reason you should have to pay money to sell THEIR goods. Real drop-ship operations will charge you anywhere from $1-$5 on avg for the 'handling' and 'packaging' of your order (usually per 'order' no matter how big the order).

I tried Doba, but I had a really tough time finding products that I could sell at competitive prices. For any product I researched, there were people selling it on Ebay for less than what it would cost me to buy from Doba. You should try to pick a specific niche and find a dropshipper that specializes in that niche. You will get better deals and more profit.

    Frede5,

Do you mind if I ask how you go about initiating contact with wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, asking them if they will drop ship for you? I am interested in a few products but not sure if there is a certain method I should use to contact the manufacturers. Any information/guidance is greatly appreciated.

I did drop shipping at Sunnygain.com. It is a China-based wholesale online shop. Compared with other sites, its prices is low!

rusmco: It's not always so easy to find real dropshippers. That's why I joined worldwidebrands.com (no - I'm not affiliated with them in any way).

Before joining them, I searched and searched only to find nothing but scammers selling garbage drop-shipper lists or they were 'middlemen'.

Most of the bigger manufacturers won't offer drop-shipping, but if you keep searching you can find a good 'distributor' online. The main thing to look at (in my opinion) is whether or not they ask for a reseller tax ID.

If they do, chances are that they're the REAL thing. If they don't require one - then they're probably not really selling to you at wholesale prices. There might be a few exceptions to this, but I've yet to find a REAL drop-ship company that doesn't require this.

The thing is that if they're selling to someone at 'wholesale' prices... they need to pay sales tax PERIOD. If they don't collect this information from YOU, they end up paying the taxes themselves.

If they're paying it themselves... they're probably just selling to you at 'discounted' prices NOT wholesale.

Most of the 'bigger' companies sell so much 'wholesale' that they don't bother doing the drop ship thing, but you can sometimes find 'distributors' that offer this.

There is no specific 'method' that I know of with regards to contacting them.

They either offer drop ship or they don't, but just stay clear of SO-CALLED drop shippers that don't give REAL wholesale prices (in most of these cases it's like buying from Walmart and reselling).

Get on the phone and call manufacturers of what you're wanting to sell and play it like you've got this big retail shop and become an authorized dealer.

I suggest you also look at the following sites Storenvy, iOffer, or eBid to start stores on. The sites I mention are vastly cheaper than Feebay!

The best thing to do is create your own site, incorporate some good SEO and link building strageties and make that money!!! Remember the only thing that eBay has going for it is self generating traffic. BUT honestly, if you take the time and do the work for your given niche you can generate the same traffic in no time. And keep the seller fees in your own pocket. For example, if you can get on the 1st or 2nd page of Google for a few choice keywords you will have generated more traffic than you will be able to get on eBay.
