Drop in SERP but not in visits

    Hi,

    For a long time I have maintained a position on page 3 (SERP 29) on google.com and page 1 (SERP 3) on google.co.uk for my main keyword "mens underwear" and that accounts for on average for 80% of new visits.

    I have now dropped to page 16 (SERP 154) on google.com and page 1 (SERP 9) on google.co.uk for no particular reason.

    I don't understand why this has happened?

    However, despite these drops, there has not been a drop in the % of new visits for this keyword, in fact, it has recently increased from from 72% to 89%

    Can anyone speculate about this anomily this?

    Thanks

    Hi,

    I have edited the above because my explanation was not very clear. I have been using google analytics.

    Thanks

    It has something to do with the volume of people searching for something using that keyword.

    The thing I can not understand is that my competitors only fluctuate 1 or 2 SERP's, if at all, yet mine fluctuates quite significantly.

    What you're saying is pretty much impossible. There is no way that you go from page 1 to page 16 and your visits for that keyword remain the same or even increase. No way! Most people won't even check page 2...

    I can only tell you want analytics is telling me and that is that the % of new visits for the keyword "mens underwear" has hardly changed.

    My SERP for "mens underwear" on google.com on 14/04/09 was SERP 23 (top of page 3) and on the 15/04/09 it dropped to SERP 154 (page 16)

    Today we are SERP 126 (page 13)

    The % of new visits as reported by Google Analytics for "mens underwear" is as follows

    10th April = 74%
    11th = 75%
    12th = 79%
    13th = 74%
    14th = 85%
    15th = 72% (SERP drop)
    16th = 89%
    17th = 89%

    I agree that is impossible. Your drop could be from a variety of things.....but to go from first page to 16th you must have done something bad in Googles eyes. And as far as your traffic...are you using paid advertising like adwords?

    if you are still receiving the same number of traffic from when you were second, perhaps there is just something wrong because people wouldn't have the time to check page 2 or 3.

    some niche keywords the visitor searches deep for what he wants usually when he have to choose between products, but dropping to page 16 is just too much for this case

    I am using no paid advertising, and I don't know whatelse to say. The stats speak for themselves.

    I am bemused

    What you're saying is just not logical, I find it hard to believe that people go though 16 pages just to get to your site. You must of miss calculated somehow
