Well I woke up this morning and my website had dropped from the 1st page to the 4th page for one of our big keywords. We have had this spot since the beginning of the year, haven't made any huge updates to our site (same keyword density, same design, minor content changes on internal pages), and have quite a few backlinks to us. The site has been around for almost two years, and I couldn't find any supplemental links. Any ideas as to what caused this?
That's unfortunate. Hopefully you can get it up there. I'm not sure how relevant this is or how true, but I've heard when specific keywords fall off the charts for searches, many of the companies fall from the front page. Could be the reason, but this is just stuff I've heard through the grapevine. Good Luck~
i also going with this kind of activities done by google, every day and every time when i search for perticular keyword it shows differ ranking in serp.
It may just be a glitch - time will tell (1 or 2 days). Also - have you been consistantly building links into the page? You need to keep on top of link building - NEVER STOP!!!
My sites have been bungee jumping across the pages. On 28th Oct I was ranking 21st in google then on 29th I had completely disappeared for my favoured keyword. After about 2 days I checked again and now I am ranked 10th and my other site which has been ranked 126th for a month is now 3rd in googles rankings. Maybe a major update caused this or a datacenter was down but it seems to have settled down now
I do agree with you. It was just anomaly. The thing is that one should not stop lnik building. It will come in few days as it was.
Thats unfortunate. I have heard that that google does this rejigging towards month end that sometimes catches you on the wrong foot, but it should be normalizing over the week, I think. Let me know if that happens. Good luck!
My websites also keeping running back and forth from google first page for many keywords. Don't know the reason
One of my sites went up and down on first page last week and I did a post about it. Web Optimization: Crazy SERP's Now it is about where it is supposed to be. Post was dated Halloween 08.
I don't know, same thing happened to me in mid-August. Went from the first page to the fourth. I kept working on backlinks and adding other new content, but it just keeps slipping to 5th and 6th. For the keywords in question, the top spots go to very thin sites that are ultra-targeted and have almost no backlinks and no updates. The #1 is literally a 2-page domain with three external links.
whoah that kind of thing is really discouraging. I have had that experience with one of my sites and then i thought it could be that i may have too many backlinks that are not relevant to my site. But really I am not sure why it happens.
I have also experienced that on some of my keywords. Though I have noticed that some of them have brought back on their original rankings. I guess, it's really a glitch.
Exactly what you said in your first post most probably caused it, if you have not been making any updates then Google is likely to "forget" about you. Now by that I dont mean actually forget about you but instead rank another site higher than you as they are more up to date and the website is currently active. Not only this but you said you have very little backlinks, if another site came along and competed against you I am assuming they could easily beat you this is most probably the reason.
