What could be the possible causes of a drop of the average position in a campaign where nothing changed? Does the competition start to play harder?

Lack of fresh content, expired backlinks (moved to deeper pages for example) and like you said - competitors - that some of possible reasons, but I'm sure there are more.

We are talking about Adwords right? Not natural... there seems to be a little confusion,

If you have seen a drop in rank without changing anything then -

    1) Your QS has dropped
    2) Competitors ad rank has increased (whether it be QS or bid)
