    Hi...

What do people think about Dreamweaver?

I personally love Dreamweaver and use it all the time for web development.

I wanted to know, what web designers are using these days, and what they think is a good thing to learn? Maybe Dreamweaver CS3?

I like the editor, not too crazy about the wysiwyg idea though.. I just need syntax highlight and I'm good to go!

Are you more of a hands on notepad html programmer type of person??

I kinda never understood, how people programmed or made websites without the use of such programs like Dreamweaver?

If I made a site using pure syntax and notepad it would take me ages!!

And I am a prof web developer.....

lol, I started around 1995.. so back then notepad was kind of a reality.. I used to write PHP, HTML, and CSS in notepad.. eventually I got into using an IDE known as PHPCoder, then moved up to Dreamweaver and been using it ever since. Mostly Dreamweaver gets its bad rap from those who use the wysiwyg part of the IDE. I know how to code, I just need it nicely highlighted so it's easier to read. It's not hard to use notpad.. just not as easy on the eyes I guess

Despite knowing HTML (inside out) and scratching the surface of other scripts I'm a disaster at writing just script. In other words I'm crazy about the wysiwyg interface in Dreamweaver.

Domains were very expensive back then lol.. hosting too actually.. I was paying like $75.00 per month for like 50mb space hosting. I cannot remember exactly how much domains were but I do remember not too long ago paying nearly $40.00 a year for a .com

And yet you use Dreamweaver WYSIWYG?

Professionals code themselves. I code myself, and I am not close to a professional. HTML is really, really easy. Dreamweaver outputs code that is not needed. It takes about 10 minutes to code a HTML page, about 15 to style it, and up to an hour for me to make images and stuff for it.

Is your HTML invalid? Does it use excessively nested elements? Is the whole layout a table? Do any of the elements contain style="position:absolute";?

If so that is bad, unprofessional coding.

That being said I sometimes use Dreamweaver for the Spry widgets that are too much complex Javascript for me.

    Cheers,

    BP

I use Dreamweaver for HTML website. I havent see any disadvantages of it. It's easier to use than Edit Plus :)

I hate dreamweaver with a passion, or any other WYSIWYG editor. I much prefer to just code the site myself, I use notepad++ and would highly recommend it to all of the above posters that have said they use dreamweaver just for the syntax highlighting.

    Really?

I write all my code by hand,

Just like I don't need a voice converter to convert this to text.

Once you learn the functions, vars, commands and terms, its like writing the Alphabet .....

    Guess that just me :)

I use dreamweaver almost all the time, I find it useful for FTP and Code Highlighting, not hot on the WYSIWYG functionality though, it seems to break stuff using that! I'm on DW CS3 and I actually much prefered DW8, unfortunately I can't get DW8 working in Vista... Damn you Bill Gates!

I picked up a copy of Macromedia 2004 MX about 4 months ago on Ebay. It was a "Buy it Now" for $35 so I jumped on it. For $35 I figured I could check it out and see what all the fuss is about.
As of now, there's nothing I can do with it that I couldn't do with any other editor. I rarely use the Design view, other than for basic text editing. I find some of the shortcuts usefull. And the synchronize fuction to update is pretty nice.
Maybe it's my lack of experience, but IMO, there's nothing there to justify the heavy pricetag. I'm satisfied knowing I spent only $35 and will continue to check it out. But really, right now it's little more than a super-fancy text editor.

    It's great.

When you start using local test servers, AJAX, PHP mySQL etc it's unbeatable. That's why people don't understand why it's so costly.
