been using an old copy of DW for years...

getting a new laptop and dont want to by DW as i only use a few features and think there are better OS options out there....so, what can you guys recommend?

i dont really use design view at all...

all i really need is the code view...i like code prompts so they come up as im typing code...
i need to set up the ftp connections for the sites...

thats about all i need from it really!!

    so,what do you recommend?

    thanks

Dreamweaver is king PERIOD! Check out these, some are open source others are paid. But i do highly recommended downloading the latest version of Dreamweaver on your new laptop, as it's nothing like what you are use too. Adobe has done a awesome job on the latest version of Dreamweaver, it's well worth taking a look before jumping ship... Quanta Plus, Aptana, CoffeeCup HTML Editor, OpenBEXI, Bluefish, Microsoft Expression Web, Amaya, Microsoft Visual Web Developer, KompoZer, BlueGriffon..........

Given that Dreamweaver is a steaming pile of manure you can learn NOTHING of value from, it's good to see someone finally abandoning the overpriced sleazeball crutch.

Just grab a flat text editor and test in the browsers... Others suggested notepad++, which is 'ok', but I prefer Flo's notepad2 since it can be set to allow multiple separate editor windows at once instead of shoe-horning everything into one window. Tabs in a code editor is a step BACKWARDS in functionality, particularly if you have a real development workstation with a large display or multiple displays.

If by that you mean king of nube predation and encouraging sleazy development practices, leeching money out of people who don't know any better and as responsible for broken layouts and inaccessible design as an entire boatload of PSD jockeys and script-tards.

After all, the only thing about web software made by Adobe that can be considered professional grade tools are the people promoting it's use.

I started with DW, but after reading Deathshadow´s and the late Dan Schultz´s posts on the benefits of "REAL" coding I started to learn html the right way. Picked up a free template and messed around with the css file. Started to make my own sites with pure code. After 6 years I´ve learned a lot put still don´t know nothing :) To me it´s a learning process everyday... So don´t use DW or other WYSIWYGS!
