Has anybody used Dreamhost for a forum or other db-intensive application? I just started a forum and this afternoon it seems the server is really slow to respond. I hope this is just a temporary glitch and not something I'll have to contend with every day.
Welcome to DreamHost. On a really bad day they can't even load the css for the control panel in a timely fashion. BTDT and moved on.
I've heard all bad things, the control panel is awful, and the service is bad. The servers go out a lot. Im on bluehost and they are actually pretty good, the tech service is maybe a 6/10 but my sites are always up. If you want to pay premium prices for less bandwidth, and great tech support try liquidweb they have awesome support. I used to have a dedicated with them, and plan on getting a shared or virtual hosting with them again. Only issue with them is lower bandwidth, although they do run "dark fiber". Stay away from hostgator, they shut down my site for 3 days, and wouldn't turn it back on. I lost a lot of money.
Thanks for the replies. Apparently Dreamhost had problems with one of their servers or something yesterday. Well, I'm committed for the time being.
Hosts like dreamhost and servage are indeed overselling. They are good enough though for small sites. Once you're going for bigger sites, you could consider going to another host (usually not as cheap as dreamhost or servage, of course). Dreamhost is talked a lot bad about, but also quite a few good reviews have been written. It all depends on how big your site is.
