I host my sites on this host. It really depends on each individual customer, I guess. At one point, I thought Dreamhost sucked as well, because I got downtime for 2 weeks! My website kept going down many times each day for two weeks. But, after I got moved to 2 different servers, I experienced no more downtime.

So, basically, it's really your choice. They are definitely overselling, but if your website isn't going to be really giant, you can go with them. Especially since their pricing is very cheap--less than $3/month if you use a promo code :) When I signed up, I used maximumoffer and I got $97 off, so that's why it's less than $3/month if you go with a yearly plan.

If you're going to have a resource-intensive site, I recommend going with a dedicated server instead :p

They have recently upgraded all their servers, and with it I have found that speeds and uptime have dramatically increased. It is shared hosting, so you have to hope that no one else on your box is a resource hog, but you can politely ask to be switched.

I'd signup using one of their offers (999, 777B) and its only $20 a year at most, a bargain if you ask me!

All hosting companies will suck for some people, and those who are disappointed tend to make a lot more noise than those who are satisfied.

i am planning to get hosting with hostgator or dreamhost or godaddy as my time completes with my current host. I had came across this site already and as well on this forum dreamhost is known to offer you down times very often. Wats your opinion about other two?

I'd definitely recommend hostgator shared plans for low to medium traffic sites.

    Avoid godaddy hosting like plague...

dreamhost is good for medium and less CPU intensive sites
and regarding the protest even there is a website called "PayPal sucks" aren't we trading here with paypal. there exists a certain group who always want to go against the big names and create a name for themselves.

I have my blog and two small sites hosted in Dreamhost under "Crazy Host" (don't remember the excat name of the hosting category). I just pais around US$23.0 using a promo code and so far thing are going well. It's been a month and I haven't had any problem Besides, you can create your own promocodes or get afilites to make some money on you own. :)

They don't ban sites based on bandwith. There are sites spending more than 1 Tb with no problems, IF they aren't CPU intensive.
The problem for me is slow sql and no php fopen, so lots of scripts don't work, and I won't reprogram all of them to use curl... for those, I use another webhoster. That is why I use 4 webhosters. Never put all eggs on the same basket.
