I have a coworker use 1&1 hosting with no problems. I've also used 1&1 for domain registration. They offer some rediculous rates.
Do not go to Dreamhost right now. Their new offer just killed them and they're not providing any timeline for a fix. I had to quickly find another host and get my sites out of there. It went from @1-2 seconds for my page to load to over 15seconds or longer, including many timeouts - this lasted for days and their support provided no 'support'. With my new host it now loads in 0.7 seconds - much nicer...
I actually don't mind their homegrown CP, I like it better than 1and1's proprietary CP. Hmmm. I havn't had that problem- maybe it was just your server? BTW, who's your new host? Always on the lookout for good ones.
I heard a lor about dreamhost, and I've got a fex questions. 1. I'm located in Europe.. where are the servers located ? 2. Are there people from Europe, who host on dreamhost ? ( What about the connection ? ) 3. Control Panel. Are there some Screenshots ? 4. Can I see some example-sites hosted on the first package ( this one for 9,95 dollars ) ? Regards !
I agree with gamecock, i'd use them for more than storage if their control panel was any better, but i guess its just the flipside of the coin. your not going to get the best deal if they have to pay for cpanel licenses.
Im hosted on dreamhost and in England, on my forum the speed is great. My forum is example, www.pixelcarart.com it usally has at least 3-40 members on. I am also on the cheapest package. Also the coupon code: COUPON40 , gets you $40 off
I have 10 sites hosted with them they are okay... not bad if you want save some money use SAVEIT whil registering $49.95 off
I just signed up this weekend. The offer was too good to not evaluate. So far the page loads have been faster than my standard host, but that could just be a routing issue. I like cPanel better, but you get what you pay for. Not having awstats available by default and having to setup my own PHP installation to get around their security limits were a setback, but you get what you pay for I guess. Their support seems timely with my questions. I used MAX97 on checkout. 1 year of hosting for ~$22.
Their hosting panel isn't all that bad at all, it's a bit confusing to find things at first but you soon get used to it. I host about 10 sites with them and they are very reliable and fast loading, especially when I was previously with godaddy (sorry...extremelyslowdaddy). I've not had the experience that it takes 15-30 mins to set up anything with them such as databases, seems to work very quickly, especially, again, compared with delayingdaddy. Being able to host all your domains on one account is the best feature for the price though. Great is that.
I am in the process of leaving Dreamhost because of the custom Cpanel they use. When you have anyone do any work for you they are lost in the CP and many times CANT do what they need to do because they are not familiar with it or how it works. I wouldnt suggest them at all cause anytime you put a support ticket in they make it out to be your problem when in actuality its an issue the that damn CP. Just my opinion though.. PGZ
its no cpanel -- but for the price, and the features/storage/bandwidth you get, i'll put up with it. I've had a few problems - but the first time i emailed them to tell them my site was down, i got an email back within the hour, and my site was working again. Very small niggles, but i'd recommend them. (also havent had a problem with the cpu limits yet, but my site isnt massive) p.s dont take discount codes -- unless they give you the FULL discount, i think its $97. cheers.
Dreamhost has a lot of grunted customers. As soon as you start using a bit more than expected, they kick you out. Check out the threads: http://webhostingtalk.com/search.php?searchid=1001485
They're ok I think, I'm based in UK as well and it seems to load fine, but sometimes you can't connect to their FTP servers and SSH access can be laggy One of my hostees was digged once and they just shut down my site till i installed wp-cache, but otherwise it's fine. And for discount codes, use DH0697 Gives you the full $97 off your bill, not taking any commission here. Also, I don't quite like their One-Click Install, 'cos it takes like 10 minutes to setup, when Fantastico can do it almost instantaneously!
The only bad things i've seen about Dreamhost so far are their Control panel and CPU usage. It can takes a long time to load thing such as the bandwidth page sometimes.. Though i'm pretty happy with them because their speed is pretty good for a host that is supposedly overselling. I'm mainly using my account for downloads so CPU usage isn't a problem. 1TB bandwidth = sweet
DREAMHOST. PROGRAMMERS HAVEN. The control panel is good but if u know unix and are a programmer, i don't know of a better host. Almost 2 years with them. Nothing but good things to say. Its a true hosting company with their own datacenter and infrastructure.
I felt that way at first but after having problems with Fantastico one click installs I've come to appreciate DH's. My main gripe is that they don't offer AWStats or Webalizer. Also, their customer support is much slower to respond than the other host I use. Like many I have a bunch of sites with them. I have had problems with CPU usage so I keep my more MySQL intensive sites on semi-dedicated plans with another host. But DH is certainly a good buy for most people. Richard
