DreamHost and website/domain name purchase

    Hi,
I purchased a website with domain name from someone who uses Dreamhost as their web hosting. I did not want to have to get an account with Dreamhost myself so is there any other way that I can get the website and the domain name other than having to create a Dreamhost account? Can I for example buy the expired domain name (expiring next month) from GoDaddy and then in the meantime download all the website files to my computer, only to upload them again when I possess the domain name?

Thanks for any help on this!

    Thanks Wrankin,
reason I was asking is that I was not aware that when I purchased the site and domain name, DreamHost do not allow a domain name push if the domain name was purchased via them. So other than buying into their services, which I do not want to do, I was hoping that once the name expires I could just buy it up, but I was not sure about this. Maybe DreamHost keep the domain name even on expiry for all I know.

Even after it expires it wont become available for 3 to 6 months in my experience.

    Hi,

Your better off not letting the domain expire because most of the time you will not get it and the site would be offline for at least a month.

What you need to do is get the seller to unlock the domain in their control panel and request the EPP code (sometimes called an AUTH code).

At the registrar of you choice initiate a transfer for the domain. This needs to be done soon if you want to avoid down time.

Give me a PM in you need any help doing this.

I'd also recommend you follow JPC-NickO's advice. Dont let the domain expire...Just get it transferred to a place that'll give you more flexibility.
