I'm in, even with an entry fee, no free hosting, and buying a new domain, the knowledge is worth it

as abusiness owner I am always interested in advertising opportunities

but so far in this thread, everyone wants things for FREE

thats not the kind of customer to advertise too...what could I offer to someone for whom $6 a year is a lot?

why would i sponsor prizes that cost me money, to a group that does not spend any money?

sponsor does NOT equal FREE MONEY

    sponsors want CUSTOMERS bottom line.

someone even said $1 domains...ICANN CHARGES MORE THAN THAT for a domain...so it would be a LOSS to someone een if they were ICANN certified

I think this is a great idea, and maybe needs to move into a "contest"

so there is an entry fee, a portion of the entry goes to cost - (thats why i asked who handles the money, a $1 entry fee leaves maybe 50 cents left after processing fees) - and then there is a pool that the winner pulls from

the more people enter the more can be won

good idea, but still lots of work to solidify it

I was the one talking about 1$ domains. Because that's the kind of incentive that most people need to join.

If they put Domain name costs over hosting costs over the long hours of work working on the new website, and still they have to pay an entry fee, obviously most people will back off of the contest.

Plus, what's about the Free or cheap stuff people want to get in the contest?
The contestants would place adversing or backlinks or whatever on their websites withing the Top of Google, that's promotion right there. The contestants won't be your clients, the visitors of those websites might be.

True, but you are not necessarily targetting this group.

I mean, there will be a lot of webmasters who will watch the contest, but won't take part in it. ( And I can say that over 3/4th of the people here will do that)

Some will write about the contest in their blog, which will give you additional exposure as a sponsor. People will come to know about your brand better, which may help in terms of recall value for future ventures.

    Hey,
    I'm up for a competition. :)
But why don't we just say it has to be a freshly created subdomain on a specific site like typepad.com or some hosting company which is also gonna sponsor the contest?

And I would like to add a rule to make it fair for everybody:
None of the words we have to rank for may be used in the second-level domain name or as the subdomain name.
    - Otherwise it will be about who is the first to register the best domain name.

Without the targeted keyword on the domain it will be more difficult to own the rankings. So it will have to be a term with little or no competition.

You could register a domain an set up sub domains for people who enter?
That ensures everyone sarts on level pegging

Or if we are targeting a competetive phrase we could use something like squidoo or hubpages?

The problem with that is that you can't design the pages yourself, nor can install plugins to help you out.

Make it a new domain. It's the only way to go.

Anybody that can't afford the domain shouldn't be entering the contest.

Hi guys, just been reading the thread and listening to what people have to say
so far ive had a few people willing to put up prizes
a years free hosting and a free domain
    free banner design
speaking to my rep at market leverage and they might be willing to do something
also had a chat with a few guys who run popular sites about some free banner ads on their sites for a month
i will personally offer the winner $50
also possibly some free articlesfrom an established writers site

still not really had enough firm interest in it though as yet so spread the word about it etc..

Well, you're getting there, and you might get some sponsors to hop on after it gets rolling.

Domain Page Rank will contribute $50 cash (paypal) for prizes.

Yeah. A Sign in page would have time to be in place already at least.

Here are few takes on my side.
register an .info domain (info for 2.09 and the 1.81$ in the prize pool)
so just a 4$ investment. if we have about 50 players thats about 200$ winning revenue.
I can offer free hosting to all contestants. (as long as everyone abides by hostmonsters tac)

    bye i am in :)
I can sponsor a decent prize money if the winner (or/and runners up) can write a report on their techniques.
or tell it to a writer so he can write it. that report will be sold at DP with 50% comission going to the winner and 50% to the sponsors of this event.
