Hi. I made an amateur mistake and need some help please. I bought a domain and hosting acc with godaddy (probably first mistake) then I posted about 10 articles to my site over the past 4 weeks. Yesterday evening I read some articles that basically said that domain names with hyphens are considered spammy. My domain has about 4 hyphens. I then went to buy a new domain(with the plan to replace the old one) from namecheap because most people recommend them. I then tried to transfer this domain to godaddy and this was only possible after I had to pay a fee. After the payment they sent me an email stating that the domain can only be transferred after 60 days. I also put the godaddy NS in my namecheap domain this morning and when I input the url in my browser nothing comes up yet. What can I do to make this new domain be my main domain and do away with the old one? Will it affect me in some way with the search engines if the same content suddenly shows up with another domain and the old one can not be found? Any other things I need to consider? Any help appreciated please.
domains with hyphens are fine for the most part, there just ugly and annoying for anyone looking to type it directly in their browser. 4 is probably a little much though lol. waiting for the domain to update is called propagation. use https://www.whatsmydns.net/ to check what your domain is up to. Your site is relatively new, so I wouldn't worry too much about the seo. If you have submitted it to google, I'd recommend using their "change of address" . All your internal links are going to be dead as well, so you'll need to change those over to the new domain.
Thanks for the advice sweetpea. I have managed to sort the problem out. Still waiting for customer care to get back to me, will probably still wait this time next year. So what I did was I added the domain name in addon domains in the godaddy Cpanel. I then pointed it to the same folder as my first domain. I then went into the domain section and it created name servers there which was different to the first domain`s NS. So I went to namecheap and entered the new NS there and virtually within a minute the site was showing up when I put the new domain in the address bar. Now I will just have to sort the rest out of making my new domain the main one and sort of doing away with the other one once I changed my url in all the accounts I created. Hope this helps some one else who might have a similar problem
