Dotster.com/MyDomain.com: BIG DOMAIN Names SCAM

Discussion in 'Domains' started by GeorgR., Jan 19, 2008.

I got an email from CJ since i am signed up as affiliate for dotster.com and mydomain.com

The offer was a banner which should advertise for "great commission", the offer is "unlimited .info domains" for $0.99 each for the rest of January with a certain coupon code.

I wanted to post this since $0.99 is a good price for an *.info

    However, what happens is that:

YOu go on dotster.com or mydomain.com and search for ANY random domain like "kjsdinweiwemsdo". Then it searches and it takes a while - and it PRE-registers any domainname you enter, it pre-registers *.org and *.info

It shows them as "not avalilable" but directs you to SEDO to "make an offer" to buy the domain.

    Just to let you know.

    Georg.

Thanks for the heads up, sounds like a rather unusual scam to me, netsol do similar, but they just lock it into their registrar for 5 days so you can only buy it from them. this should be in domain discussion or general chat though imo :D

I always thought there would be a registrar that would do something like that! Thanks for the warning.

I tried to reproduce your findings but I couldn't. Every bogusdomain I checked at Dotster was available and remained available. Dito at Mydomain.com

Transfer your domains out of there, or at least when their about to expire. These companies don't deserve our business.

I checked the domain WeArePowerfulIndians.com on Network Solutions earlier today and it was available but NS blocked the domain within seconds... now it isn't available for the next 5 days... check it out guys! This is the worst practice that a registrar can get into...

i have seen that a few times actually...eg. with some of those "get an expired domain"-services.
The majority of those did this "pre-registering" and then "offer" you to purchase the domain.

WORSE: if they automatically put those domains up to auction and then coem some stupid minimum bids. A domain which was FREE just minutes ago before you searched for it!

Avoid such sites like the plague, this is serious scam!! They should be reported to internic or whoever has authority.
