In my opinion this is the problem - surfers are hardcoded to think in terms of .com extensions first which to me means it is .com or nothing.

If the .com is not available find a different domain and buy the .com .org .net and any other dot you would not be happy with someone putting a competing site on.

    Hello...

We have several different domain extensions we use as most of the time the .com is gone
so we choose to use the .nets .org .ws extensions

If i personally had a favorite its .net and my least favorite is .info as its often
misused by spammers or those that throw a directory or website up for a year or less then
    they discard the domain.

    thx

I always buy a .com, ive never once settled for a .net or .org, there is always an alternative.

Theres no end of great names out there, endless choice, that crazy talk of all the good names are gone is funny. :)

    Yes you are correct :D

    www.Pimp-my-directory-online-worldwide.com
    sounds like a winner :)

the problem comes in when trying to find 1-2 word domains in .com that look and are relevant to the websites subject ;)

I think if your going to get a .net or .org make sure to buy the .com also and redirect it to the .net or .org

True pipes - I have a list of 20 or 30 on my desk available right now and I am not actively searching for one.

if you have dot com, for majority cases, no idea why anyone will use dot net or dot org,
read the post carefully before bababa...

    I go for .net

Never been a fan or .org always felt it was stupid unless the site was an organization.

Its one of the few things that i dont struggle at :) sometimes you can get lucky with availability, recently i purchased quite a short domain, had written down about 6 choices while i was watching tv, checked them the next morning, at least 4 were taken but got luck with one.

Admittedly my searches are accross a number of days sometimes.

Tip, but you already know this i bet, be careful where you do your searching and snap up immediately if you find a must have name, some doubt this is true but its rumoured some registrars deliberately grab a domain if they see you interested and constantly returning so they can sell it back to you.

    I would get .com first.
If it's registered, i would move to an other .com (use synonyms or complete the .com domain name with "now", "best", "plus"..).
If you want to get the exact keyword, i would go with the .org for anything related to information and business.
The .net should be fine for everything else, but many may see it as a substitute to the .com, like someone said before on this topic.

Yes thats exactly what they do ;)

they check to see if its decent then they try and sell it for $500- $2500 with variables close to the domain you where searching for.

    thx

I just love dotORG. Although people tend to place it as 3rd, right after COM and NET.

Shocking stuff, now when i search i just look to see if its registered and showing in google and il type the URL in directly aswell and see if its a parked page or anything comes up, if i type it into godaddy its my last action before buying it, at that point ive decided im grabbing the domain.

none of the above. If i dont have the .com i usually wont go for anything else. cause if i do a .net the owner fo the .com wil get more type in traffic off my hard work.

yeah, but then if you choose a long .com or one with a bunch of hyphens no one will remember that anyways. I still think a good .net is better than a unmemorable .com
