ITs easy to get out of the sandbox with a good linking plan. Just build quality links slowly and don't BLAST directory submmisions ,etc. I'm personally thinking that the sandbox doesn't really exist, just an over-exxagerated myth.
Trustrank is what matters, get trusted websites to link to you.

I have a feeling it's because the keyword wasn't terribly competitive.

I ranked very easily for that term too. Either this keyword is considered competitive, or the sandbox doesn't exist

This is one of the critical questions. Many times I have seen reasonably good evidence that seems to contradict the common idea of a "sandbox" (all young sites/young domains will be penalised in the rankings for a period of e.g. 3-6 months). The common answer is "the keywords aren't competitive".

So - what is an objective measure of keyword competitiveness?

(the cynic in me would say - if the ranking contradicts the sandbox ideas, then the keyword is not competitive).

For "myspace proxy", the example given, the overture keyword tool gives a count of over 29000 - pretty high. The number of Google search results (not a great indicator, but useful to consider) is around 1.7 million. If these aren't high enough figures for the keyword to count as "competitive" then what are? Are there any objective measures for this?

it has 5,780 links. I think it saves all addresses into the database and then generates them to Sitemap. Others have only 3-100 links

I think there is no big player on this keyword, check out the second and third position. they had lower PR and less backlinks, "Dontfilter.us" should rank at the top for keyword"Myspace Proxy".

The website owner must be a Keyword master who discovered this niche.

High search volume + less competition = golden mine!

Sandbox and adwords are related. Since no one is bidding on "myspace proxy"
    Not a single lonley webmaster.
    I like maths
There were quite a lot of searches actually, you are right.
    ~1 No adwords = zero
    ~2
    earches done in May 2007
    Count Search Term

    6 get myspace proxy school
    6 myspace proxy web
    5 free myspace proxy site
    5 go myspace proxy
    5 list myspace proxy

I suspect that this is an emerging sandbox. I thnink you have discovered an excellent keyword, you now will face some stiff competition from posting it here.
If a lot of people start to PPC you will drop to top 30 within 3 months
    Pure speculation, but interesting

dontfilter.us has a well-optimized on-page that made it easy for us to get rank#1 for the keyword in 2 weeks :) aside from having less competitors.
