I dont understand why my ad is not showing up for some keywords

I added: "new cars" as a keyword - note the quotes. Then I added a negative keyword: -[new cars] so that my add appears for: new cars cheap or for: new cars pictures BUT the negative keyword is so that my add wont appear for just: new cars

However...my ad wont appear for: new cars cheap or new cars pictures

So...I dont know how to do to make my ad appear on : new cars (and something else)

    thanks

    Hi Ricky,

First off, bear in mind that physically searching Google to see your ad appear is a very unreliable - and dangerous - practice. Google records searches made by a particular visitor and will attempt to rotate ads shown on search results. Unless your budget is enormous for these terms, it's also highly likely that your ads are only being shown for a very small percentage of the impression share. So, in short, I'd first query whether your ads are really not being shown as you describe, it might simply be they're not being shown to you. Do your account stats show no impressions?

Assuming there is a problem of some kind (and there shouldn't be - the phrase matches should still show) I'd probably recommend approaching this in a different way. Rather than trying to eliminate the [new cars] searches, I'd look to tighten the focus on the searches you do want - in other words I'd look to try and turn out some more exact matches (e.g. [new cars pictures], [cheap new cars]). This will probably cut your costs and improve your CTR. Using a Search Query Report is a good way to check the actual keywords generating clicks.

However, check your Adwords stats to see whether your phrase matches are really showing - I think you'll find they are...

    Hey Jon,

I am using "Google Ad Preview" to look at my ads. This tool allows to search for Ad positions through geographical targeting.

The keywords I gave where just an example...I am bidding for lower cost keywords.

I am already using the approach you suggest (bidding on exact matches). This will decrease my CPC for those matches, but I also want exposure for many other queries that contain my keywords.

Theoretically, there is no problem with my use of " " and [], but I cant find the way of getting them to work under my specifications.

When reviewing the Keywords status, they appear active but with the note: A negative keyword is preventing your ad from showing.

That I thought was ok to show up bc I dont want the ad to appear for that specific search but the problem again is that my ad is not showing for the keyword + other queries...

    Hi Ricky,

As you say, in theory you should be able to use negative exacts in the way you describe - Google even has a help page you may have seen that describes doing something very similar and claims that you 'could' still get hits on ads such as you want:

    http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=67991

they even have a video that graphically shows using a negative exact match that still allows non-exact keywords to trigger. So, as far as Google help is concerned, what you're trying to do should work.

I would still suggest that your ads are showing but perhaps very infrequently. The preview tool behaves in a very similar way to a web page and as such, if there are other factors making your ad unlikely to show (quality score, CPC, etc.) then they will still come into play. Are you seeing any impressions in your campaign reports for these keywords? What about the search query report?

It might also be a good idea to post this problem in the Adwords Google group as there you have a good chance of getting a reply from an Adwords employee. Alternatively you could contact support directly.

    http://groups.google.com/group/adwords-help?hl=en

Sorry I can't point directly to the problem but I hope this helps just a little!

    Jon

You have it set up right. My hunch would be your QS is too low for some of those other variations so you're not showing very often, if at all.

Cobnut provided some good tips and direction...follow his advice and you should get it worked out.

ps - I do the same thing all the time except I use broad match + embedded negative match. Works like a charm.

It sounds like you set it up correctly, but your probably not bidding high enough. The new car marketing is not cheap to bid on...
