Time and time again I see forum owners doing this and I'm guessing there's a simple reason behind it. On sites that are centered entirely around a forum, many webmasters don't know what to do about the homepage, so what happens is, they put an introductory page there, this is usually an image of some sort, maybe even a flash intro. Well, in terms of getting organic SEO traffic, this is an absolutely terrible thing to do. Google treats that page with great importance, so ideally you want it to be full of great content and keyword rich for your relevant keywords, this will help you get natural, organic traffic, which is the best kind of traffic, because it's free. I think most webmasters actually do this because they install their forum in a directory, most commonly 'forums' and then when they think it's too late to go back, they stick with it and put an introductory page as the homepage. It's definitively worth the effort to reinstall the forum, especially in the long run, if your goal is traffic that you don't have to actually pay for. Never think it's too late to go back, that's simply untrue. Just the simple act of going to your forum systems support area and requesting a bit of help should be enough. There are many people willing to give support for free. Little tweaks here and there add up to big differences and in SEO that difference is the difference in the traffic your forum gets.
