Don't Know Why Your Site Lost It's Rankings

We've all be there. We've had a website that we own or worked on that turned out to do pretty good in the search engines. For all your main search terms you've found your site at the top of Google and you believe your SEO work has paid off. You're the best SEO on your block and no one can tell you otherwise.

Then one Monday morning you wake up and check your rankings for the fun of it and suddenly find out that you've lost your rankings and have been moved past page six. You start wondering and even asking aloud; "am I banned?", "was my site hacked?", "did I do something wrong?", "I bet my competitors worked really hard on their SEO work and now bumped me to page six".

Those thoughts among many others fly through your head and you are left without a reason why, why your website rankings have suddenly changed and you've dropped from page one.

The possible reason for your loss of rankings

Of course, you may have done something wrong somewhere. Or it could be possible that your competitors have picked up their game and bumped you from the top but have you considered the old 'nofollow' attribute which can be applied to a link? A link that could have been directed towards your website. Oh no.

So, here's one possible scenario that should never be overlooked if you find your rankings have fallen on Google. Could it be that one or even several of the people who link to you have decided to add the nofollow attribute to the link to your website?

As we know our websites could be floating at page 3 for years and suddenly jump to the first page, all simply because of the one magnificent link you obtained - either by a link request or by someone linking to you because they like your content or feel that it's useful.

Well once that link is gone, or once an owner decides to nofollow that link, when Google updates their page rank you can kiss your position in the SERPs (search engine results page) good bye.

I myself will have affected quite a few websites because of the work I did last week and over the weekend. Many of the clients I'm working for have some pretty decent and stable websites but they were giving out too much page rank to other sites. I tightened up the page rank leakage and I can safely assume in a few months the websites they linked to may feel a hit - maybe but you do get my point.

The above scenario also clearly shows that SEO is not easy work. Organizing your SEO campaigns is of the utmost importance and in case this ever happens to you, it would be a good idea to have a list of all the sites that link to you (even though the list could be extensive) in order to find out of the links to your site have change.

If I am correct, there are scripts that can determine if links to your website have changed too.

Does anyone have a special or neat way of checking out the details of links to your website? Is there a script that can tell you if links to your site are followed or nofollow?

So please remember; if your website rankings have fallen, it may have nothing to do with you or your SEO work. It could very well be as simple as a someone adding nofollow to your link which can have a huge affect on your rankings. Be aware.

Why bother responding when there is already so many responses on the same post over here?

Some people monitor all of their back links but you should always be building links and work as much on making something people want to link to over building 100% of your back links yourself. To each his/her own..

yap you are right but one big mistake is that you place more than 100 links with same anchor text so google likes the variation so you should place the links with different variations.

I do that all the time without variation. Care to explain why my sites rank well when I do it? What evidence to you have that Google likes variation?

Because lack of SEO work.it needs more detailing work. people monitor all of their back links but you should always be building links and work as much on making something people want to link to over building 100% of your back links yourself.
