Hmmm... So what type of domain is best for SEO, I am not even sure it matters but this is what I noticed:

On Yahoo! the search term: "mesothelioma" here are the URL's of the top 5 results:

    cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/6_36.htm
    cancer.org/docroot/CRI/CRI_2x.asp?sitearea=&dt=29
    cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/malignantmesothelioma
    cancerbacup.org.uk/Cancertype/Mesothelioma
    cancerbacup.org.uk/Cancertype/Mesothelioma

On Google the search term: "mesothelioma" here are the URL's of the top 5 results:

    mesotheliomaweb.org
    cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/6_36.htm
    mesolink.org
    mesotheliomaresourceonline.com
    mesothelioma-asbestos-lung-cancer.com

This pattern worries me that if I purchase a .com, I will be kicking myself in the but forever, it also shows that .org, .gov seem to be "shoe ins" for the #1 spots.

Is this just by chance, or do Yahoo! and Google take a liking for certain URL's more then others, and if so, what are the URL's Yahoo! and Google give the highest ranking to.

    Thank you,

    John S.

I don't think it makes any difference however what could make a difference is that the people who use .gov .info etc are more experienced at seo or marketing and use the terms to make the site look more authoritive.
I use .info for some sites for that reason. I also use .biz if I want to make the site look more formal or businesslike.

Alright thanks, I got yah then, so domain doesn't matter. I just thought... well.. on Yahoo! http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=slv1-&p=mesothelioma the like out of the first 50, about 43 are .org/.gov but I guess it's just because they REALLY are government sites or organization that get lots of backlinks.

Alrighty then, thanks :) I will just go with .com then

The TLD of a domain doesn't make any difference to the rankings. People always speculate that a .info doesn't rank as well or a .edu or .gov ranks better. This isn't true, .info doesn't 'seem' to rank well as there are comparativly less of them around to the .com, also most of them are newer so may well still be sandboxed.
Other domains like .edu and .org seem to rank better but you have to remember that these tend to be authority sites that get lots of people linking to them without any work (usually one way) so this makes their propensity to rank a hell of a lot easier.

The only real difference that a TLD will make to rank is in the local searches. .co.uk, .de and .fr etc etc all receive a boost in the local versions of the search engines for example.

Hmmm... Makes sense... They get tons of backlinks because they probably are government or organizational sites, thank you very much Matt, I was still a little uncertain before thanks for the clear explanation.

I think on .org/.gov/ , there are more back links, bez it comes first page.
