Im looking at a domain, butits only available with the -

    ie domain-name.com

Ive always been afraid to use a domain like that, but I can only really see it being a problem when it comes to word of mouth or type-ins.

    What do you think??

Dash or Number add one whole word when someone spells your domain
From a search engine's point of view it will be ok the - version

However prepared to loose some traffic from the undashed and the unabbreviated version of the number ( domainFournames.com )

You will lose some traffic to the undashed domain. I would perfer a dash then a number unless it is relevant to the domain name, also you might want to investigate this but on other SEO boards it is believed that the - domain can actually help SEO ranking course this is only one small factor very small factor in the whole SEO scheme ;)

    i would not prefer a "-" domain
but still there are examples sites with - also doing well, so everything depends on the 2 words and also on promotions of the website

The cooler trend nowadays is throwing in the whole name including the first sub prefix and extension, e.g:

    del.icio.us

    web2.0awards.org

which adds up to the thousands of possibilities.

Not sure about the SEO benefits though.

That's called 'domain-hacking'. Surprisingly, some very good ones are still available. For instance, today I registered the following:

    o.rgas.ms
    or.gaz.ms (or ass.gaz.ms & girl.gaz.ms & gay.gaz.ms or just plain gaz.ms)
    mada.ms

Don't know why, I have absolutely no interest in adult web sites, but the hacks seemed too cool to pass up. Probably just auction them off one day...

    Cheers

If domainname.com is regged then I go for domain-name.com in most cases. I would prefer a short hyphenated .com then some crappy long unhyphenated .com which ppl will mispell anyway.
