Domain vs. Blogger

Ok guys maybe its me and yes I am being cheap here. Adsense clickage is the bottom line here. Obviously the more traffic the more clicks.

I have created more blogs at blogger.com cause its free. I have been adding content regularly but would hate to think my works are in vein. I have used a few tips and tricks I have read about getting individual pages indexed and such but am just wondering, Should I just be creating sites on domains that I buy instead of using my time on free blogs like this?

Would love to hear all of your opinions and what you have come across when it comes to free blog and paid for domain.

Also, How do the layouts of blogger templates effect adsense at all. Positively or negatively?

I think that the cool thing about blogger is that google find it faster and add the content to its index, and nowdays if you are not in google... you dont exists :(

anyway, domains have their charming too... they are easier to remember, and makes your site look more "pro".

I think the best is to have a domain, but the MOST important thing is to have a cool and adictive content... without that, both domain or blogger are useless (we are talking about money and adesense so...)

why do you worry about domains?

you can set custom domain with blogger as well, so you can have a website like www.yourname.com and still host with blogger if thats is what u r looking at.

Blogger is great in my opinion and i never felt am loosing anything since i started blogging.

Well, I really would go for a separate domain name...
Much more "pro" and easier to remember.
Really, don't even think twice :) The first thing to do when you're starting a project is to buy a good domain name..

Domains and hosting are not that costly either. You can get one easily for anywhere between $10 to $12

in blogger you are bound to the limit they set, but in your own domain, you can customize as the way you like..

Well, your own domain & hosting gives you much more control on your site.
Domain + hosting are not going to cost you much $$$

I think you can well optimize your site not blog. As Abhik said blogger is limited but with sites you can make as many modification you want. This way you can make it more search engine friendly. If you want to submit your site then some directories will not accept if you submit your blog.

So in my opinion sites are better in many ways than blog.

what everyone's trying to say is that you have a lot more control over your own domain. I've used blogger over a year and then tried wordpress but the best thing is when you've got your own domain with wordpress installed.

All really great comments guys. I have been trying to test the free world of blogger but seem to find that It takes a lot to get any page ranking. I have gotten traffic to some of the blogs but not really what I am looking for. What do you guys think about adding different subdomains on to a domain with wordpress on them all? The blogs would be on different subjects.

Google, and I think the other SEs, see each subdomain as a separate site. So you have an advantage of using a good keyword as part of your overall URL.
But if you can provide good content for each subdomain, the rankings and traffic will come. Just having a subdomain won't increase your traffic.

No, if your domain has a PR value of 10, doesn't mean that all the pages on that site are PR 10, let alone subdomains.

That's not what I said ganesh. If you want to have a site about skateboards, it's easier to create a name like skateboards.domainname.com than skateboards.com (unless you own that domain name of course!)
It's easier to rank for "skateboards" with the subdomain that has your keyword in the url than a domain name that might not have anything to do with your keyword.
PR doesn't have anything to do with it.

To me, not having your own domain screams 'I'm not serious'. But then again, there's nothing wrong with NOT being a very serious blogger. Content can still be interesting.

My greatest regret is not buying a domain name when I started.

    Yeah just look at http://fakesteve.blogspot.com/

And yes if you want to have a lot more control over your blog, go for a domain name of your own.
You don't even need to buy hosting! Just buy a cheap domain from godaddy and sign up for free hosting from a site on this list: http://www.makewickedmoney.com/free-hosting-sites-that-include-php-mysql-and-sub-domain-names

I would personally pick a domain over a free blogging site. It just feels more professional IMO. :D

I love blogger. I use it with my own domain and you can change the template around so you do have alot of control over it. The nice thing about blogger is that you can easily create lots of pages and easily have adsense or any other coding come out automatically on all pages even if you don't know php or css.

I focus on writing and posting articles everyday to my blog and don't have to worry about adding adsense to each page that I create. It happens automatically once you paste the script in the template. I also have it so that people can easily bookmark every page with their favorite social bookmark by simply pasting a simple script in the template that comes out automatically on all posts.

I receive email subscribers everyday by simply pasting my aweber email form script in the the template and the email form comes out automatically in every page that I create. This is a great way to gain lots of newsletter subscribers.

Blogger has alot of advantages especially if you don't have much programming skills and there is a google group that focuses on helping individuals on how to customize blogger and do all types of things to it.

My whole business is ran from blogger sites with my own domain and I love it. What I do is host the blog with another hosting company and create it with blogger. You publish the blog from blogger to any hosting company that you like and you can back it up to make sure that you are safe if a hack or crash occurs.
