Domain Transfer Problem

    Greetings

I recently transferred one of my domains to another registrar. After I initiated the transfer process, I renewed the domain in my old registrar because it had expired. The transfer is now complete, but the expiracy date doesn't match. It should be ending in 2013 (one year extension with former registrar and another one year extension with new registrar) but it is indeed ending in 2012.

The new registrar is saying that the renewal that my former registrar did was only a 45-day auto-renewal so it didn't register as a full renewal and they probably got a refund on the registry level because of that.
My former registrar is saying that they explicitly renewed the domain so it is my new registrar that's at fault here.

Is there any way that I can know which one is telling the truth?

    Thanks in advance

I think the fault here lies with the registrar where you did the renewal. My reasoning here is that if your former registrar explicitly renewed the domain and charged you - that should be reflected at the registry. I am unaware of any EPP operations that can decrement expiration time on a domain. I wonder what TLD this is - I think they disallow transfer within 60 days of a renewal - or maybe that is just creations. Anyhow - you have my two cents now :)

If your domain was renewed by old registrar, your domain should not be transferred to another registrar for next 60 days. Your domain should be renewed during transfer. You can ask your old registrar to check the transaction report for your domain (renewal report from registrar end).

Ahh - cool - thanks for verifying kailash. I thought the 60 days applied after renewal, but didn't remember for sure.

Try to contact your domain name registrar directly and ask this question.

I confronted them with this and they said that only applies to creations or recent transfers, not renewals.

I already did, as I said in the original post. Both of them are saying the other party is at fault here. I just want to know who's telling the truth, I don't even care about the refund.

Finally some closure on this issue. Thought it might be of some use to you too down the line.

    "Hello,

Thank you for contacting Technical Support. The domain was renewed within on our system on January 6th of 2011 for one year. Please keep in mind that there is an ICANN regulation which states that if a domain is transferred within 45 days of renewal there is still a transfer fee paid to the new registrar but an additional year will not be added to the registration by the new registration.

This is why it's always best to wait 45 days after renewing a domain name before starting a transfer and this is why you didn't get an extra year added with your transfer. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

    Sincerely,

    Technical Support Team"
