I have a domain similar to iphoneupdater.com when you have a domain like this that would describe a product or service that is separate, but applicable to a TM device software, is this still a domain that you can't own?

Apple may or may not come after you. Facebook has gone after a lot of domain even if they just have face or book in their names, but allfacebook.com does not seem to have a problem. There are sites with facebook in their names that are news sites and facebook seems to leave them alone. I would leery of using iphone in the name.

If it has the word 'iphone' in it then it would be a trademark violation. Apple has been known to go after domains that infringe on their trademarks. Some companies aren't as bad as others - but Apple is pretty bad. I would stay clear of it.

Better not to use trademark domain name cause it gonna bring you trouble.
Taking advantages of the iphone keywords is not a good idea, it might end up you lost your domain name to google and yet need compensate Apple company for using and spoil their reputation .
