A friend of mine purchased and designed a website for me. Has has domain control panel access. He's not ready to give me the password. Domain will exprire this month. If the domain expires on 20th, will it be available for renewal or acquisition from the same date? Will there be any extra charges for renewal or normal price?

I think you get about 15 days renewal time. If you do not renew then the price goes up and you have to wait 90 days. Godaddy did this for me. Now I am waiting for my domain grace period of 90 days to get over.

You mean that for any domain which is not renewed yet, you have to wait 90 days for it be available again for anyone to acquire?

Yes, if you do not renew in those 15days. You can renew after 15days but price will be too high, say around $60.

I believe it is 30 days for renewal at no additional charge
then another 40 days "redemption period" when you would have to pay additional $100 for renewal
then 5 days pending deletion when it can't be renewed
then it becomes available for registration

why wait for it to expire anyways?

Because the person who actually purchased the domain for me is black mailing me now. I want the domain to expire and available on internet so I could buy it.

If someone else has control over your domain, that person may renew it for another year at least.

Only if such person decide to not renew, you will have to wait for the grace period first.

Depending on what registrar it is, the period of grace may last from 15 days (GoDaddy) to 40 days (many other registrars)

Later you will have to wait around 30 days for the redemption period before enters into the pending for deletion phase.

In total is about 60 days, more or less... but only if the domain is not renewed. If you don't have control over the domain, you may ignore if the person who has the domain will renew it or not.

If he is blacklisting you, he would probably wants to keep the domain for himself and will not let it expire. Sorry if so.

Knowing from who.is that he hasn't renewed the domain yet , I guess he won't. Because due date is after two day. Anyway, I'll have to wait for two months at least it seems:(

After expiration renewal of domain is really tough. And they can demand extra charges too so try to renew the domain before expiration date.

godaddy gives me 15days notice. As people have written above, I think the person who has control over your domain may renew it again. Do you have hosting access?
